1988 - 1991 BMW M3 (US VERSION)

Bosch ECU #0-261-200-071

TOOLS NEEDED

Phillips screwdriver #2

Small flat head screwdriver

10mm socket and ratchet

FUEL CAUTION

With the Dinan Performance Chip, you MUST use 91 or higher octane rating. If you use a lower rating your car will knock or ping..(This can and will damage your engine)

STATIC ELECTRICITY

Your ecu can be damaged by static electricity.. Before you open the ecu briefly touch any metal object too discharge any static electricity...

REMOVING THE ECU FROM YOUR CAR

(1) Open glove box and then remove the plastic pins holding the glove box straps, then let the glove box hang down..

(2) Use a phillips screw driver and remove the plastic glove box panel..

(3) Using a 10mm socket remove (4) bolts holding the ecu into place (remember where      the bolts go) Then remove the ecu harness from ecu  by squeezing tabs then pivot harness out and then to the right..

OPENING THE ECU

See Figure 1. Place the ecu facing down (number side down) using a screwdriver pry the locking tabs (which hold the ecu together) then separate cover from base..

See Figure 2 and 3. Hold ECU. metal base side down, with the plug housing and facing away from you. Grip the metal ECU mounting ears with both hands and push up on the upper printed circuit board where the two plastic pedestals connect to the PC board. By doing this, you should be able to separate by unsnapping the pedestal mounting standoffs.. Caution!!! Do not push up on the corners of the upper PC board, or the board will flex and break.. (This ECU is not cheap and is hard too come by)

See Figure 4. Find the socketed chip on the upper PC board. This chip sits higher then any other chip.. The chip also has a part number on it..

Before you remove the chip make sure that you remember how the chip is seated...(cause if you put the chip in the wrong way you can damage the ecu) Too pull chip out use a small screwdriver and slowly pry on each side very slowly and evenly until the chip is completely removed.. See Figure 5. install the chip carefully don't bend the prongs... Too put the ecu back together just reverse these steps... And Enjoy!!!!
